I did it! Yesterday on opening day I saw Iron Man 3 4 times in one day. I spent 11 hours in the cinema! Literally. I did not leave at all. Most of the screenings followed each other so closely I ran from one to the other & made it just in time for the trailers, missing the ads entirely, & only got a half hour break between screenings 2 & 3 to grab a hotdog & check Twitter to see all the @ replies going ‘Holy shit you are srsly doing this?!’

Haha the guy who checked my tickets thought I’d made a mistake. “You know you have 4 tickets to Iron Man 3?” You’re damn right I do. :-D
I've also reserved some of the graphic novels from the library - waiting for them to come into my nearest branch. I've never been that interested in picking up any of the Avengers comics, as there's so much, & there are differences. But I really want to know more about Extremis (it's been mentioned in reviews a lot, but I feel it counts as a spoiler, so I'm doing the hidey-text thing) because of the implications for future films.

Sales Post
Apr. 24th, 2013 14:47All prices include postage within UK (which is basically daylight robbery now, so if you think any prices are a little high, chances are it isn't entirely my fault). I always get proof of posting but if you want the extra security of recorded delivery then that'll cost extra. No trades. Prices are negotiable.

I Didn't Get Lost Exactly...
Apr. 23rd, 2013 22:51Oh man the Thor 2 trailer! I can't deal with all these feels - I'm still recovering from Iron Man 3. I WANT TO RUN MY FINGERS THROUGH THAT HAIR.
In RL news, on Monday I walked over to Fairfield library, then headed over to a supermarket via the cyclepath to do my food shopping, eventually ending up at Tesco. This was a problem as I was headed for Sainsbury, so I was about 3 miles off course. To make the whole thing really fun I had of course got ALL THE BOOKS out of the library (including a couple of hardbacks & a 900 page history of socialism) so had been lugging them along for 45 minutes. I didn't even end up doing my food shopping in the end. I stopped at the nearby McDonalds to grab something to eat, but my feet still ached when I'd finished eating, & Tesco is huge so I didn't feel up to trekking round it, so I got the bus home & went to Asda later in the evening instead.
Having pondered a little, I think I know where I went wrong. I was walking the cyclepath, & I vaguely remembered seeing the path from the road Sainsbury was on, so obviously I just needed to follow it & turn off when I get to the right road, which I'll know as I'd recognise it. What I hadn't remembered at the time (as I hadn't waked down that particular bit of the road in nearly 10 years) was that the cyclepath goes under a bridge beneath the road. Which I had walked right under. *facepalm*
Oh well, at least it was an adventure.
I've been trying to be reasonably productive recently, because Iron Man 3 will shortly be taking over my life. You'd think having seen it already it'd mean I'm calmer than everyone else. Oh nonononono! I'm even more desperate as I KNOW JUST HOW GOOD IT IS! I'm like a junkie craving a fix. I. NEED. TO. SEE. IT. AGAIN. *twitches*
I've been looking at times for opening day & I reckon I can squeeze 4 showings in: 11:00, 13:30, 16:40 & 19:00. I thought about going to the 10:20 showing instead, but I'm already booked on the 11:00 (I booked as soon as tickets went on sale about a month ago just to be on the safe side, & at the time that was the first screening) & I still wouldn't be able to make anything earlier than 13:30 so it's not like it'd alter my schedule. Also it's the only showing that's in 3D & the 3D on Iron Man 3 is quite good. Also I want an excuse to wear my Iron Man glasses.
I am totally aiming to break my record (chart only counts cinema viewings):

And some photos from the premiere screening:

IRON MAN 3 WAS AMAZING. NOT ONLY BETTER THAN IRON MAN 2, BUT ALSO BETTER THAN IRON MAN 1 (IMHO). The action sequences were all fantastic & tense & exciting & all the things good action sequences should be. The comedy elements were also good, with a lot of great lines & sight gags that had the whole audience cracking up (me & the guy I went with both concur that it's the funniest film either of us has seen in a while). Also anybody who thinks Pepper is not a badass should prepare to be firmly & thoroughly schooled. I can also report that the kid in the film is 100% non-annoying, & I have a very low tolerance for kids in films so that says a lot. For that reason I got a bit twitchy when I saw there was a child character, but mercifully my worst fears were averted. The Mandarin was great, but I can't even hint at why without being all kinds of spoilery.
FAO UK people: I can confirm there is a post-credits sequence (we don't get left out of the fun as we did with our shawarma-less Avengers), so keep your arse in that seat & ignore the silly people leaving. So many people left during the credits though. WTF ARE YOU PEOPLE EVEN DOING COMING TO SEE THIS FILM?! It's standard procedure with Marvel films that there's a post-credits sequence, & presumably they've seen Iron Man 1 & 2 so must know this. The credits themselves have a great style though, & are worth watching for their own sake.
Also I totally approve of Happy's taste in TV programmes.
Rambling about the screening itself:
There was a guy in an Iron Man suit in the lobby while we were waiting to go in, which was entertaining. We got special 3D glasses to watch the film with. There were 4 designs available. Mine were Iron Man Mark 42s, Kev got War Machine ones (you can see them behind mine). There was a Iron Patriot pair, & I can't remember the other design - we got handed them by cinema staff & I just briefly glanced at the poster on the way in to check if there was a better design to trade mine for & concluded that I was happy with what I'd been given.
We went in slightly late & things were delayed a little - doors were supposed to open at 18:00, with red carpet stuff being shown from 18:30 & the film starting at 19:15. But we were let in at least 15 minutes late, we only got about 20 minutes or so of red carpet, & the films started at 19:30. Nobody really seemed to mind though. They even dragged a member of staff onstage because it was their birthday & we all sang Happy Birthday for them & probably embarrassed the hell out of the poor guy (his colleagues did it as a surprise).
The red carpet was fun to watch. There was an adorable moment that I didn't pick up on at the time. I saw RDJ was wearing knitted Iron Man gauntlet mittens in the interview he was doing, & they looked a little odd with his fancy getup but I thought it was just him being wacky. But Kev pointed out afterwards that he'd seen one of the fans giving him them. How sweet is that?! :D
Back to the film itself for a vague but 'sort-of-spoilery-but-not-really' bit:-
Fair warning: The first scene involves a punch to the feels so hard it should be banned by Geneva Convention or something. That level of cruelty is evil & wrong & would make Moffat flinch. No, this isn't really a spoiler - it'll still get you. But I feel the need to warn you anyway.

I AM UNCONTROLLABLY EXCITED
Apr. 17th, 2013 20:12SCREAMING
GUYS! I’M GOING TO A SPECIAL PREMIERE SCREENING OF IRON MAN 3 TOMORROW EVENING! NOT THE PREMIERE, BUT IT’S SCREENED SIMULTANEOUSLY & THERE’S A SATELLITE LINKUP TO THE RED CARPET OF THE ACTUAL PREMIERE IN LONDON.
Basically Cineworld Cinemas did a thing where they would hold 5 regional premieres at whichever cinemas got the most votes & mine came third. There were various giveaways to get hold of tickets (you couldn’t just buy them). I got mine through the local paper.
Me right now:

I still have to find someone to go with me though, as I have won a pair of tickets. Being antisocial sucks when it comes to producing a friend at short notice.
PS: We're specifically instructed not to bring phones in with us, which sucks, as while I'd never keep my phone on during a film (I despise people who do - either sit & watch the film or stay at home & download it or wait for the DVD, you twats) but I doubt people would care about someone tweeting the red carpet stuff.
I'll definitely do a review when I get home afterwards though.

- Seems that the classic Doctors won't be appearing in the 50th anniversary special - So basically - barring late castings &/or lying to put people off the scent - it's one previous Doctor, & one former companion (one who has already made a comeback & had so many references made to her it feels like she's still on the show anyway at that). Not exactly much to commemorate 50 years. I mean we got more of a big reunion in The Stolen Earth/Journey's End.
Some useful browser extensions:
- Predator Alert Tool for OkCupid - Nifty browser extension that scans an OKCupid profile & alerts you to any red flags. Requires Firefox with Greasemonkey. Not tried this, but thought I'd pass it along.
- FoxAmp (alternative to FoxyTunes) - Recently I gave in & upgraded Firefox from the ancient version I'd clung onto. Fortunately most of my extensions had updated compatible versions available. Unfortunately FoxyTunes wasn't one of them as it had been abandoned. After much scouring of Mozilla's extensions & a lot of Googling, I stumbled on one lone replacement. As the name suggests it only works with Winamp (which happily enough is my music player of choice). It lacks a lot of FoxyTunes' features (no progress indicator showing how far you are into the song, & no alarm clock function), but it does have a stop button, which FT unaccountably removed several versions ago. Another problem I've discovered is that it has a habit of freezing & remaining on a song title - the controls still work, it's just that the track it tells you is playing stops updating. But that doesn't really impair the functionality & is more annoying than anything. And it's not like there's any choice if you want a means of controlling your music while in Firefox. Sharing this in case others are interested.

Ding Dong The Witch Is Dead
Apr. 8th, 2013 20:06So, former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher has died.
Appropriate music:
Have been rolling my eyes at the sanctimonious 'we shouldn't speak ill of the dead' types on Twitter & Facebook. Those people can fucking BITE ME. I've waited years for this. IDGAF that it's not 'classy' to gloat. To hell with being classy about the woman who destroyed the country. If people want to take the quiet & respectful route, they can go ahead. But acting holier-than-thou about those expressing some pleasure that someone who had such a severe negative impact (one which is feeding current efforts by the government to fuck the country over further) has gone is stupid considering the mainstream media is falling over themselves to give a rose-tinted summary of her. I was speaking ill of her while she was alive & I don't see why I should suddenly start pretending she was a good person. Don't even get me started on the people who think she's some sort of awesome feminist icon purely because she is female.
To anyone saying 'But it was a long time ago & she was old & she had dementia so couldn't remember it anyway!', here is my response.

Apparently the freezing cold weather could go on for another month. PLEASE BE WRONG.
My flat is in an old house which is badly-insulated, with thin walls & single-glazed windows. I spend most of my time in several layers of clothing & wrapped in a thick fluffy blanket because heating would just be too expensive. It's even worse in the bathroom, because the main room at least has bodyheat + my computer. I can see my breath on the air in there. I'D LIKE TO BE WARM AGAIN.
The weather was fairly OK yesterday - though not quite spring-ish - & it looks like that is going to continue for a few days according to weather reports, so hopefully things might start to warm up. I took the opportunity to have a bath in ~relative~ comfort while I could (still fucking cold though).
Considering plans for the weekend. Today I intend to spend the day in the cinema seeing The Croods, Wreck-It Ralph (again) & the 3D re-release of Finding Nemo because this sudden appearance of the sun in the sky scares & confuses me. Tomorrow there's a local Bedroom Tax protest to go to. And Doctor Who, obviously. Tuesday is all about raiding supermarkets for discounted Easter eggs. Because buying eggs before Easter is for suckers. I may hike over to the big Tesco for that one, as I've found a route that'll only take an hour to get there, rather than the roughly 2 hours one I knew about.
Also, random moment of *squee* for Elementary getting a second season! I hoped it would, as I've been really enjoying it, but you can never tell with these things, & not being in the US means it's hard to really ~get~ how it's going down in its home market. Also the random mini-hiatuses have been weirding me out, but I think that's just American TV scheduling oddness & apparently something to do with sports(?).

Saw Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters this afternoon. Quite fun, though I had to readjust a little, as I was expecting something like Van Helsing, but this took itself more seriously & lacked the latter's comic elements. Also a few inconsistencies - like it goes from day to night randomly depending on the needs of the plot (Hansel is knocked unconscious but wakes up close enough to town that a townsperson finds him yet when night falls he's still wandering in the woods, the Super Important Witch Ceremony is held under the light of a special rare type of moon, yet 5 minutes after Hansel & Gretel crash the party the sun rises just like *that*) & the DIEBEETUS plot element just seems really awkward. Still it was enjoyable & the 3D was pretty good.
But it was far surpassed by one of the advents preceding it.

( Best advert of all time - under cut as DW is doing that weird thing with displaying the wrong videos on friends pages again )
I mean it's slightly ruined by the fact that there's no way 3 has decent phone coverage in the Shetland Isles, but hey, that concept is only slightly more outlandish than a moonwalking pony.
Also, Argo came out today, & I bought it on bluray. I really should be saving my money but I caved as the film is fantastic & the special features are awesome. And it was even cheaper (by 99p) to buy from my local game store than it was on Amazon, which was nice. It comes with a UV copy of the film, which I have no idea about, so that'll be something to figure out.

The release of that Loki figure is just over a month away so here is yet another sales post to try to help me accumulate enough money to actually pay for it.
All prices include postage within UK. I always get proof of posting but if you want the extra security of recorded delivery then that'll cost extra. No trades. Prices are negotiable.
( NEW: Jewellery, wigs, wig display heads, art magazines )

OK, I'm going to rant about reactions to the Oscars. Because I need to vent & I'm wired on the coffee I was drinking to get through the ceremony. Since I reset my sleep cycle for the Oscars, am on a caffeine+sugar buzz, & it's stupid o'clock in the morning here & I suck at getting my thoughts down, I'm using bullet points in the likely vain hope that helps with coherency (haha).
- Firstly, THE BOOBS SONG WAS INTENTIONALLY BAD. That was the joke. The whole fucking point of that skit was that people were expecting MacFarlane to be crude & offensive & ruin the integrity of the ceremony blah blah, & Shatner shows up as Captain Kirk saying he's come from the future to warn him that if he doesn't shape up he's gonna go down as the worst Oscar host ever. In other words: That song was bad & you should feel bad. MacFarlene then proceeded to break out some classier material, & Kirk reports back that the reviews are getting better, going from "worst" to "pretty bad" to "mediocre", etc. He might as well have had a large neon sign as a backdrop saying 'I AM LAMPSHADING THE FACT THAT MY HUMOUR IS CONSIDERED TACKY'. I kinda found it annoying as I was watching it, as I'd rather have had an opening that was funny in its own right for being good & funny, rather than funny for being bad, but after watching the reactions throughout the ceremony it became funny for being epic trolling. As a side note, the song seemed to me to be making a point about how Hollywood had a sexist attitude towards actresses ('I've seen pretty much every woman's tits because you guys are all expected to get them out at every opportunity!') rather than perving.
I genuinely honestly think that if anybody other than Seth MacFarlane had made those jokes the same people howling about sexism would be fawning over them highlighting the problems inherent in Hollywood.
- Gifs of Jennifer Lawrence on the red carpet saying how she was starving & asking if there was food = haha so funny cos actresses starve themselves to fit into their Oscar gowns but this girl gives no fucks which is awesome. MacFarlane makes crack about actresses conveniently getting the flu to lose weight = OMG HOW DARE U MOCK THEM U PIG!!!1
- The Kardashians are basically a joke & constantly the butt of humour = no problem. MacFarlane makes a crack about how Ben Affleck might get mistaken for one of them because of his scruffy beard = OMG BASTARD!
- While I agree that the crack about George Clooney & Quvenzhane Wallis was a little close to the bone, the point was that older guys in Hollywood have a tendency to go for younger women - something that often been pointed out. People are also taking it to suggest that MacFarlane is basically pimping her out. He said in 16 years she'd be too old for Clooney. That's a big leap to go from '25 years old is considered ~past it~ in these circles' to 'he should totally bang her right now'. Like I say, still a little skeeved by making this joke about a 9 year old who is sitting in the audience, but he's not exactly advocating paedophilia as some people are suggesting. And if that is what he is going for, surely it's also pretty skeevy that he is accusing Clooney of something like that, as that's not really the sort of accusation that should be flung around as a joke - if anything that supports rape culture (unless he has been genuinely accused for going after underage girls & I haven't heard this, in which case yeah that gag is really beyond wrong).
- Then there's the convenient picking & choosing. People are raging over how MacFarlane said it didn't matter that nobody could understand Selma Hayek because she was attractive so they can just look at her. Completely failing to mention that he listed a couple of examples of Hot Foreign People, one of whom was Javier Bardem, but mentioning that a man was included in this list ruins the argument so shhhh! And never mind that the butt of the joke here is himself & the American audience ('Haha we're are so ignorant & monolingual!').
- And it's somehow mean of him for implying that Jennifer Aniston was once a stripper. Except that the joke was "of our next two presenters, at least one is honest about being a former exotic dancer", which was in reference to the fact that Channing Tatum (who was presenting that award with her) had actually been a stripper. So if the gag is about how stripping is something to be ashamed off, then he's as much the butt of the joke as she is. If the joke is about how she might not be being truthful about her past career... so what?
Look, I do get that there are times when a gag can sometimes come across differently if it's aimed at a woman rather than a man, due to the context of how women are viewed & societal pressures etc, but when the gag in question includes a bloke as the punchline then that doesn't really apply.

Film Reviews
Feb. 21st, 2013 04:42So I finally got around to catching up on my f-list a few days ago! Mostly, anyway - DW only lets you get a certain number of posts back & no more, but I reckon there's only a few days gap between the point where my friends' entries page ends & where I last read up to, so hopefully I haven't missed anything major.
I was going to make a post saying what I've been up to recently, but I honestly can't remember. I've gone to the cinema a lot, & played through Devil May Cry 2, & um...
OK so until I remember anything worth posting about, I shall post my thoughts on the films I have seen so far in 2013, most of which have multiple Oscar nominations. Since I'm in the middle of altering my sleep cycle to American time to watch the ceremony & suck at thinking of things to say at the best of times, don't expect the reviews to be coherent.
The Amazing Spider-Man
This was kinda meh to me. There was a lot of setting up of a character everyone knew & it took way too long to actually go anywhere. I know the character is supposed to be an awkward geek, but conversations that are basically 10 minutes of "Um..." "Well..." "Yeah, I, er..." "So..." are not fun to watch.
Rating: 7/10
Dredd
Loved this. Tense & exciting & totally nailed the character IMO. The setting seemed perfectly realised too, though as it's been a long time since I read 2000 AD I can't comment on how accurate they were. Also if you did enjoy it & are able to please buy it, as that will hopefully ensure a sequel & the sequel ideas are really cool.
Rating: 9/10
Les Misérables
It did drag a little in places, but in such a sprawling story that's to be expected, & I have a low tolerance for drippy romance so Cossette & Marius making eyes at each other was never really going to enthral me. I also think Russell Crowe didn't quite have the best singing voice or range, but he did well enough & this didn't bother me as much as it does people who've seen the play, who had a particular vision in their heads for the character to live up to. He redeemed himself somewhat in his last song, because he was able to bellow it out & that suited his voice. Aside from that though, I really enjoyed it, & I'm not sure I'll ever be able to cry again as I'm pretty sure I used up a LIFETIME'S SUPPLY OF TEARS. Also if Anna Hathaway doesn't get Best Supporting Actress someone needs to storm the stage Kanye-style.
Rating: 10/10
The Impossible
Entertaining enough, but I found the family annoying & couldn't bring myself to be too invested in how they fared. Gotta say though, I don't get the 'OMG whitewashing!' accusations. It was based on a particular family's story. It's not even like the film pretended it only affected them or anything.
Rating: 5/10
Zero Dark Thirty
I'm not sure what to say about this. It was very dull, as it's basically about an investigation conducted slowly over a decade, & doesn't make an effort to 'jazz up' intelligence-gathering, but somehow it compels you to keep watching, & Jessica Chastain does a good job of being virtually the sole focus of the film. It's also another where I don't get the controversy. Yes, there is torture depicted, but there's no real effort to present it as necessary or try to defend it.
Rating: 7/10
Lincoln
AKA Old Guys In Frock Coats Shouting At Each Other: The Movie, starring Tommy Lee Jones & some guy with a beard who kept rambling. I found this really dull. I actually nearly walked out until Tommy Lee Jones showed up. IDK if it would have helped if I'd known much about American history - I had no idea who anybody in this was supposed to be or the significance of anything (like were the tedious anecdotes Lincoln kept going into an actual thing he did, which would make them dull but a necessary part of the character, rather than just dull?).
Rating: 7/10
Wreck-It Ralph
I loved this! Cute & charming & funny, with some cool ideas & concepts, lots of quirky characters, & some great gaming in-jokes (even though I know I only spotted a tiny fraction). Also like that Calhoun didn't go all mushy after falling in love & stayed her badass self. The 3D was pretty good. And I totally caved & bought the Sugar Rush theme song when I got home.
Rating: 10/10
Hitchcock
OK I suppose. I don't actually know that much about his life (never really been into his films so not been interested in looking into the man himself), so I can't say how accurate it was. I thought the casting for Janet Leigh & Anthony Perkins was perfect. WTF was up with those bits with Ed Gein as Hitchcock's imaginary friend though?
Rating: 7/10
Warm Bodies
Really funny. Right up there with Shaun of the Dead in zombie comedy, though this has a different tone to the humour. Has some great lines: "This is my best friend. By best friend I mean we occasionally grunt & stare awkwardly at each other." Totally want to go & see it again.

Coffee! And Links
Jan. 20th, 2013 03:53Placed an order with Jacc's Coffee. They have a multibuy offer - 4 for £10, so I picked:
- Blackberry Brandy
- Caramel Fudge Twist
- Chocolate & Raspberry
- Danish Pastry
Anyway here are some links:
- 12 Letters That Didn’t Make the Alphabet - This is absolutely fascinating.
- London Underground: 14 alternative Tube maps - Some good ones. My favourites are the Daily Mail Hate, Doctor Who, & the one in Mackintosh style.
- The inside story of how David Bowie made The Next Day - How one of the most famous people in the world managed to record an entire album in secret in an age of leaks & social media. "The industry assumes that to get what marketing departments call cut-through or mind-share for music you have to bombard people: artists are supposed to be in a constant dialogue with their fans, via Twitter or blogs or Facebook. It's a timely reminder that mystique is a valuable commodity. You can perhaps give people more by giving them less." PLEASE CAN EVERYONE TAKE THIS ADVICE.
- White House responds to petition demanding the US government build a Death Star - "Why would we spend countless taxpayer dollars on a Death Star with a fundamental flaw that can be exploited by a one-man starship?"
- Brian Blessed Alarm Clock (Android) - I still need to install this & give it a try.
- Local Record Shops Collaborative Google Map - Find independent record shops near you, & add ones that are missing.
- Why you should by Dredd on DVD/bluray - I resent the finger-wagging on display here over box office takings (of course they're low - it was only out for like a week & some of us wanted to see it but BLINKED & FUCKING MISSED IT - but the sentiment (buy it on DVD/bluray & hopefully ensure a sequel) is a good one.
- Tom Hiddleston wins 'sexiest man alive' poll, which is apparently a surprise to some people... - HOW IS THIS A SURPRISE AT ALL?
